Not all movies can have huge budgets but all of them deserve to be the best they can be. Besides Kraft services, fight/stunt coordinators are among the first things that are cut from a production - not because they are not needed but because the production feels that they can do it just was well without them. Unfortunately for the production, this is simply not true. The actors deserve their safety, the DP can often use suggestions on angles, the director loves someone who can help tell the story through the action...and it all should look good.
There is a firm line when action needs to be executed by a stunt person: either the action is too dangerous, the actor doesn't possess the required skill, or the actor refuses. However, it has become the standard that actors perform their own action scenes (scenes, not stunts). With a background in acting, I strive to bring the best performance from the talent by communicating in a language that makes the most sense to them: be it emotional, intellectual or physical. The action should alway move the plot forward and reveal character to achieve strong dramatic success.

Sweeney Todd at the Barrow Street Theatre in NYC was the longest running, and arguably the most successful, in New York theatre history. Now that the run has come to an end, I miss the production, cast, crew and musicians every day.
Enduring thanks to all those that made this production of 'Little Sweeney' possible. |
